Weird stomach feeling when blood sugar goes high?

Hey everyone!

I’ve been T1D for about 5 years now (I’m 16), and I’ve noticed something kinda weird—wondering if anyone else has felt the same.

Whenever my blood sugar starts to go up, I get this odd irritation in my stomach. It feels like it’s bloating or filling up, almost like a balloon. It’s not painful exactly, just really uncomfortable and kind of annoying.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it something normal or should I be more concerned?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Hello! It’s very interesting what you’re presenting. Indeed hyperglicemia can lead to ketoacidosis (especially in type 1 diabetes) that causes abdominal pain/disconfort (what you are describing in your stomach). The mechanism by which ketoacidosis causes abdominal pain is not clear and it may be related to the stimulation of the gastrointestinal tract by ketosis metabolites. Abdominal pain as the first symptom of hyperglicemia-ketoacidosis is very rare, but it seems that you are predisposed to that.
I would consider this symptom very important and I encourage you to discuss it with your doctor for a better control of the diabetes.
