Hello! First of all, diabetes is a complex, multidisciplinary disease due to its almost inevitable complications. A good glycemic control is the most important factor in lowering the risk of these complications (like ocular, renal, vascular, nervous issues).
The treatment for diabetes depends on its type (1 or 2 — note that there are also some other rarer types). The treatment is based on strict criteria and is escalated in time to improve the management of the disease.
That being said, there are multiple reasons for your high blood sugar:
1. Diet: juice (try dietetic ones), a lot of fruits (try to avoid bananas and grapes as they have a lot of sugar).
2. Medication effectiveness: some treatments work in specific periods of the disease
3. Body mass index
4. Smoking (can worsen diabetes control)
5. Comorbid conditions (such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, kidney disease)
Also, in some patient the control of the disease is less strict (history of severe hypoglycemia, duration of diabetes, important comorbid conditions, cardiovascular disease).
It’s very good that you are concerned about your high blood sugar levels. You can improve your diet by focusing on a balanced intake of fibers, healthy fats and reducing processed sugars. I also encourage you to discuss with your doctor any adjustments you want to make, because it’s important not to make changes that were not previously discussed with your healthcare team.
